SPEEDING ON THE DEEGAN
No drifting. Everything commits.
SPEEDING ON THE DEEGAN was inspired by the relentless motion of driving the Major Deegan Expressway in New York City—the speed, the traffic, the constant lane changes and the decisions that have to be made while everything around you is moving.
The piece takes that experience and turns it into form.
Sharp interlocking shapes push against one another while arrows repeatedly change direction. Lines cross, separate and reconnect. Some forms seem to be moving forward while others cut across their path. There’s a sense of congestion in the composition, but there’s still direction within it.
Controlled chaos.
That’s what the Deegan could feel like to me.
When you’re moving at speed, decisions can’t always be contemplated for long. You see an opening. You choose a lane. You commit. Then almost immediately, the environment changes and another decision has to be made.
The speed represented here isn’t about recklessness.
It’s about necessity.
Sometimes movement requires making decisions while you’re already in motion. You don’t always get the luxury of stopping everything around you while you figure out where you’re going.
That idea eventually became bigger to me than driving.
SPEEDING ON THE DEEGAN represents navigating pressure while continuing forward—adjusting when necessary, choosing direction in real time and understanding that movement itself sometimes demands commitment.
The composition may look chaotic at first.
But every line has somewhere to go.
No drifting. Everything commits.
