Friday night at Rooftop was our version of the Met Gala.
Rooftop Roller Skating Rink was much more than somewhere we went to skate. For my generation growing up in Harlem, Rooftop was one of the places where the street culture around us came together in one space.
Friday night was the night.
You thought about what you were going to wear. You noticed what everybody else was wearing. The cars outside mattered. The music mattered. The skating mattered. And, of course, who was there mattered.
In a lot of ways, Rooftop became an unofficial street-fashion show and car show wrapped around a roller-skating rink.
This was before the culture we were living became something that could be packaged, marketed and seen everywhere. We weren’t calling it streetwear or thinking about ourselves as part of some larger cultural movement. It was simply how we dressed, what we listened to, what we drove, how we moved and how we expressed ourselves.
Rooftop was one of the places where you could see all of it at once.
For me, that environment became part of an education I didn’t realize I was receiving at the time. Style, cars, music, movement, individuality and street culture were all occupying the same space. People were developing identities and communicating who they were before saying a word.
Looking back now, I can see how much of what surrounded me then eventually found its way into the way I create today.
ROOF TOP preserves my memory of that energy—not simply the building or the skating rink, but what happened when a generation of Harlem came together inside and around it.
The clothes. The cars. The music. The skating. The people. The energy.
For us, it wasn’t a trend.
It was Friday night.
