THE 3 FOLD MOMENT continues the story behind 3 TrainComing.
During my last two years of high school, I would stand at this Harlem subway station on weekday mornings waiting for the train to school. Monday mornings were different. After tagging subway cars at the 3 train yard on Friday night, I would watch the tunnel hoping one of those trains would come through the station carrying my name.
I knew the 3 train before it arrived. Unlike the 2 train, whose lights approached from the right coming from the Bronx, the lights of the 3 came straight down the tunnel.
3 TrainComing captures that anticipation. THE 3 FOLD MOMENT captures what happened next.
The 3 train arrives at the station—and my tag is there on the front door.
Years later, while searching through old New York City subway footage for clips to use in a promotional video for my Subway Series Collection, I unexpectedly found that moment again. There was the train. There was my name.
That discovery originally inspired me to call the piece I’M UP!!! But THE 3 FOLD MOMENT became a more accurate title because it connects the artwork directly back to the 3 train and the moment captured within it.
What began as something I waited to see as a teenager in Harlem eventually came back to me through archival footage and became part of my work again.
