MINISINK
For a lot of us, this was one of the places where our world started getting bigger.
Growing up in Harlem, your block could feel like its own little world. Minisink was one of the places where kids from my generation began meeting other kids from different parts of Harlem—not just the people we already knew from our own blocks and neighborhoods.
By my teenage years, Minisink became part of experiencing a different kind of independence.
This was where some of our first dance parties happened. We got dressed to go out in clothes we picked for ourselves, instead of what our parents chose for us. We met new people, developed our own styles and started experiencing Harlem beyond the few blocks where we grew up.
Minisink also had a connection to the developing hip-hop culture around us. New rappers and DJs from Harlem would perform there, giving young people in the neighborhood another place to hear and experience the music and culture that was becoming part of our generation.
So when I look at Minisink, I don’t just see a building.
I see one of those places where we started becoming ourselves.
The friendships were expanding. Our personal style was developing. The music was changing. And Harlem itself was becoming bigger to us because we were finally old enough to experience more of it on our own.
MINISINK is a memory of that transition—from the world our parents created around us to the one we were beginning to discover for ourselves.
