You could walk in after a long night and get a real, hearty soul food meal before finally calling it a night and heading home. That reliability became part of what I remember about the place.
It wasn’t fancy. It didn’t need to be.
M&G’s was one of those neighborhood establishments that served a practical purpose while becoming part of the memories surrounding everything else you were doing. The clubs, the parties and the people might have been the main event—but sometimes the meal at the end of the night became part of the story too.
Looking at this piece now takes me right back to that feeling: the night is basically over, you’re tired, you’re hungry, most places have already shut down—
but M&G’s is still open.
That’s why I think of this piece as:
“Soul Food Savior.”
A familiar Harlem spot that came through when you needed it.
