3 TrainComing: Harlem Streets 1920–1998
Some memories never really leave the place where they happened.
3 TrainComing was recreated from a photograph that immediately took me back to my last two years of high school in Harlem.
Each weekday morning, I stood at this subway station waiting for the train to school. But on Monday mornings, waiting for the 3 train meant something different. I had usually been at the 3 train yard Friday night tagging the subway cars, and by Monday morning I was hoping to see my name come through the station.
Before the train even appeared, I knew which one was coming by the lights in the tunnel. The 2 train came into the station from the right—the east—because it was coming from the Bronx. The lights of the 3 train came straight toward me. I knew the difference immediately.
So when I saw those lights coming straight down that tunnel, there was anticipation. Maybe one of those cars was carrying my name.
That’s what this piece brings back for me: excitement, self-pride, defiance and purpose.
3 TrainComing takes a personal memory of Harlem, graffiti and the New York City subway and brings it forward through the visual language I’ve developed since then. The moment belongs to another time, but the experience behind it is still part of the work I create today.
