At some point, being liked stopped being a requirement for moving forward.
hateMeNow was created during a period when I began noticing something changing in some of the relationships around me.
There were people I considered friends, along with some members of my own family, whose support didn’t always feel genuine. As I continued progressing and experiencing material gains in my life, what sometimes appeared to be love began feeling more like resentment—or there was no support at all.
While creating this piece, though, my thoughts weren’t only about them.
I found myself thinking about an earlier version of myself—the one who cared much more when somebody didn’t like me, didn’t approve of something I did or didn’t support the direction I was going.
I wasn’t in that place anymore.
hateMeNow became a testimony to forward movement regardless of the hate that might be scattered along the path.
That idea also made its way directly into the lettering. Look closely at the E and K and you’ll see that both appear threaded and wrapped. For me, that wrapping represents something thick, tight and secure—a steady hold.
Holding it down.
The piece isn’t about pretending opposition doesn’t exist. It’s about refusing to allow someone else’s feelings about my progress to determine whether that progress continues.
Keep creating.
Keep building.
Keep progressing.
They can hate me now.
