TWENTY TWO WEST

Eating at Twenty Two West made me feel like a big shot.

Twenty Two West already had a history in Harlem long before I was old enough to experience it for myself. Malcolm X was known to frequent the restaurant, and by the time my generation came along, the place had established itself as one of Harlem’s staples.

But my memory of Twenty Two West isn’t really about its history.

It’s about how the place made me feel.

This wasn’t just somewhere you stopped to grab something to eat. There was a certain class to Twenty Two West. The cultural dishes were delicious, the food felt like it was prepared and served with love, and the atmosphere made dinner there feel like something a little more special.

When I ate there, I felt grown.

I felt important.

I felt like a big shot.

That’s part of what I remember about Harlem restaurants like Twenty Two West. Our cultural food didn’t have to be separated from elegance. Familiar dishes, good service, community and a sense of class could all occupy the same space.

The history surrounding the restaurant gave it weight, but actually being able to sit down and have dinner there gave me my own connection to it.

TWENTY TWO WEST represents that memory for me—a Harlem institution from before my time that was still there for my generation to experience for ourselves.

Good food. Served with love. Served with class.

And for one dinner, maybe you carried yourself a little differently because of it.
