knockOut actually began before the relationship that eventually led to my marriage.
The original inspiration came from being knocked unconscious once in my life. The colors in the piece came from my interpretation of that experience—the strange visual sensation and disorientation of being laid out and coming back from it. I translated that memory through color, form and graffiti lettering rather than trying to illustrate the experience literally.
But knockOut sits here in the chronology of my work for another reason.
By this point in my life, I knew it was HER. Once I knew that, the other relationships I had with women ended quickly and decisively. There wasn’t a long process of figuring out who I wanted or keeping other possibilities around. Once I recognized what I had with her, those other relationships ended almost like a knockout blow.
That gave an older piece a second meaning.
What began as an interpretation of physically being knocked out eventually became a reflection of decisiveness—recognizing the person I wanted and clearing everything else out of the way.
