ABANDONED

Sometimes being left alone means being left untouched.

Growing up in Harlem, abandoned buildings were part of the landscape around me. It wasn’t unusual to see buildings sitting empty, including brownstones and row houses that had once been substantial homes.

So abandonment has a particular visual language in my memory of Harlem.

ABANDONED began with an original photograph taken by Harlem photographer Shawnee Tatum. In my reinterpretation of her photograph, I added my own graffiti piece to the abandoned house behind the gate.

That placement was important to me.

The piece sits back there alone—separated from everything around it and seemingly untouchable. Usually we think of abandonment as something negative: something forgotten, unwanted or neglected. But in this piece, I saw another possibility. Being left alone also meant no one was bothering it, changing it or touching it.

Abandoned, but untouched.

That contradiction became the heart of the artwork.

ABANDONED also carries a memory of the Harlem I grew up seeing—a neighborhood where beautiful architecture and abandonment could exist side by side. Shawnee’s photograph captured that environment, and my addition of the graffiti piece allowed me to bring my own experience and interpretation into it.

The building represents something that was left behind. The piece I placed within it represents something left alone.

And sometimes, being left alone can preserve what is there.
