The party might have been over, but the night wasn’t.
Willie’s had some of the best burgers in Harlem. People would eat them there, take them home, and sometimes order extra for lunch the following day. And one of the best things about Willie’s was knowing you could get a burger almost anytime.
But Friday and Saturday nights were different.
After the parties and clubs started winding down, Willie’s became one of the places people came to. You might have been hungry, but you were still outside. You still had on your fly clothes. Your car was cleaned up and shining. There were still people to see—and people who might see you.
Sometimes you didn’t even have to stop.
You cruised past Willie’s.
The cars mattered. The clothes mattered. Who was outside mattered. People were eating, picking up food, hanging around or just passing through. Willie’s had become another gathering point for the night.
In a way, the last party of the night happened here.
There was no dance floor and no admission. Just good food, Harlem streets, cars pulling through, people hanging around and everybody squeezing a little more life out of the night before finally going home.
And at the center of all that activity was the reason Willie’s had people coming back at practically any hour:
those burgers.
