Some places become part of your memory simply because they were always there.
The history of the Lenox Lounge began before my time. My connection to it is much simpler.
I remember how good the place looked.
Growing up in Harlem, shopping for clothes along 125th Street was part of life, and I walked past the Lenox Lounge many times. Its distinctive exterior and presence made it one of those places you noticed whether you were going inside or simply passing by.
At the time, I didn’t know the full history behind it. I knew it as part of the Harlem I could actually see and experience—the storefronts, businesses, architecture, signs and familiar places that gave the neighborhood its visual identity.
That’s what LENOX LOUNGE represents for me.
Not a recreation of an era I didn’t experience, but a memory of a Harlem landmark that had survived from that era into mine.
The piece preserves the way the Lenox Lounge existed within my own experience of 125th Street: familiar, distinctive and unmistakably part of Harlem.
