KAUGHT came from realizing that by this point, I wasn’t just catching feelings anymore. I was caught—hook, line and sinker.
I built that idea directly into the composition. The JECK ONE lettering takes on the shape and movement of a fish, while her sword is sunk directly into the lettering. My character is flipped upside down across her back. The imagery plays with the idea of capture, but there was nothing negative about being caught. It represented reaching a point where I knew how deeply this woman had become part of my life.
Even the spelling carries part of the story. KAUGHT replaces the traditional C with a K in the graffiti tradition of respelling and reshaping words to make them your own. But that particular letter wasn’t chosen only for style. K is also the first initial of her name. So the woman who caught me is embedded directly into the title.
The piece comes from a period when our relationship was becoming increasingly serious, somewhere around the time I believe I proposed to her. Attraction had become intimacy. Intimacy became feelings. Those feelings became love. By KAUGHT, I knew I was all the way in.
I could have simply said I had fallen in love.
Instead, I drew what it felt like.
