I never shopped there, but you didn’t have to walk through the door to see the influence.
Dapper Dan’s store was one of the staples of Harlem during a period when fashion and personal style were a major part of how we expressed ourselves.
What’s interesting about my relationship to the place is that I never actually went inside.
His clothes were outside of what I could afford at the time, and I’ve never really been a window shopper. If I knew I wasn’t buying something, there wasn’t much reason for me to go into the store just to look around.
His style wasn’t exactly mine either.
I considered the way I dressed a combination of preppy, street and sporty. What Dapper Dan was creating felt more like high-class street to me—bold, elevated and immediately recognizable.
But I saw it.
Everybody did.
During that period, Rooftop was popping. The Apollo was popping. Harlem’s underground spots were alive, and when you went to the places where people came to see and be seen, Dapper Dan’s clothes showed up.
That’s how I experienced his influence.
I didn’t experience Dapper Dan through his store. I experienced it through Harlem.
His designs became part of the larger fashion language moving through the neighborhood—the same environment where people used clothes, cars, music and personal style to distinguish themselves from everybody else.
DAPPER DAN represents my memory of that presence. Not as a customer and not as someone claiming his style as my own, but as someone who grew up watching his work become part of Harlem’s unmistakable reputation for fashion and style.
You didn’t have to wear it to know what it represented.
